In a world dominated by screens and digital media, there's something undeniably special about holding a beautifully crafted printed piece in your hands. Whether it's a luxurious business card, a stunning invitation, or eye-catching packaging, printed goods offer a tactile experience that digital designs simply can't replicate.

With the right print techniques, you can elevate your printed materials, making them stand out and feel premium without having to blow the budget. Here are some of my favourite affordable print techniques to bring your designs to life.

1. Spot UV Gloss

If you’re looking to make certain elements of your design pop, Spot UV gloss is a fantastic option. This technique adds a glossy finish to specific areas of your design, creating a striking contrast with the matte background. The gloss can be applied in either a thin or thick layer, and if you opt for a thicker layer, it adds a raised texture that gives your print a tactile, premium feel.

Why I love it: It’s perfect for highlighting logos, text, or imagery, making them stand out without adding much cost. It’s ideal for business cards or promotional materials where you want to create a subtle yet impactful design.

2. Textured Paper Stock

Sometimes, the secret to a luxurious feel isn’t in the design but in the paper itself. Textured paper stock can instantly give your printed materials a more high-end look and feel. It’s perfect for items like invitations, certificates, and even artwork prints. In fact I used the Fresco Gesso textured card pictured below for all of my own wedding stationary - I absolutely love the hammered finish to it, it was perfect for our invitations, order of services and menus.

Why I love it: The texture adds depth and character, making your print look sophisticated, personal and handcrafted.

3. Die Cutting

It you want to create something unique and memorable, die cutting is the way to go. This technique allows you to create custom shapes or intricate cut-outs in your designs, breaking free from the standard rectangular or circular format. It’s ideal for stickers, packaging, and promotional materials that need to stand out.

Why I love it: Die-cutting allows you to get really creative and playful. The outcome immediately grabs attention because they break the mould of standard shapes.

4. Foil Stamping

Foil stamping applies metallic foil to specific areas of your design, creating a reflective finish. This sophisticated shine can make your printed goods look and feel luxurious. A range of metallic shades are available to match your design.

Why I love it: It’s classy and elegant, yet still affordable. Foil stamping works wonders on business cards, invitations, and packaging.

5. White Ink

This technique uses opaque white ink to create sharp, vibrant designs that stand out beautifully against non-white backgrounds.

The white ink creates a bold and distinctive effect allowing you to print onto dark, Kraft or coloured paper stocks. It’s a digital process so it’s cost effective, even for very short print runs.

Why I love it: By using white ink on coloured or dark paper, you avoid the need to print large solid areas of dark ink. Not only does this often give a cleaner, more professional look, it also reduces the ink consumption making it a more environmentally conscious choice.

So, there you have it, my favourite ways to create a lasting impression with your printed goods without having to sell a kidney! I’ve spent years ordering print products on behalf of clients and have have built up a bank of trusted suppliers along the way who I know I can reply on. Get in touch to discuss how these special finishes could level up your next project.
